The renewal is not much of a surprise, though there was a time when the fate of this series was less certain—at least from the outside perspective. The series premiered on Lifetime in September of 2018 but floundered on the cable network. It began streaming on Netflix in December of that year where it found both a critical and commercial audience. The second season was launched exclusively on Netflix in December 2019. You stars Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg who, in the first season, is a bookstore manager in New York City. He becomes obsessed with a woman named Beck (Elizabeth Lail), stalking her on social media and with the use of other technology, and they begin dating. In the second season, Joe has moved to L.A., where he meet chef Love and begins to fall into the same toxic patterns of obsession and violence. It was loosely based on the novel Hidden Bodies, the sequel to Kepnes’ You. The third season will consist of 10 episodes, just like the previous two. Co-creators/power team Sera Gamble (The Magicians) and Greg Berlanti (the Arrowverse) will continue to serve as executive producers, with Gamble also continuing in her role as showrunner.
