Summer Game Fest 2022 may have lacked the kind of heavy-hitting announcements we typically expect from the biggest summer showcases, but the event still featured quite a few announcements worth celebrating. Besides, it’s hard to complain about a show that featured games like The Last of Us, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Gotham Knights, and Cuphead when the industry is still dealing with Covid-19-related delays and hardware shortages. Enough about what we’re still missing, though. Here’s a look at some of the absolute best trailers from Summer Game Fest 2022.
Aliens: Dark Descent
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC This upcoming squad-based action game from developer Tindalos Interactive looks to offer the ultimate Aliens experience that has eluded some other games in recent years. What little we’ve seen of the game so far suggests that it might actually recreate the horror, action, and intensity that helped make Aliens a multi-genre classic. Of course, it’s some of the new pieces of lore the game teased that really have us intrigued.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam and Battle.net) Release Date: October 28 Despite what the name may suggest, Modern Warfare 2 isn’t a remake of the 2009 game of the same name but rather a sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This 2022 installment boasts improved visuals, a potentially more mature campaign/story, and classic CoD multiplayer action. Even better, its October 28 release will soon be followed by the debut of Warzone 2.
Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One It’s been a while since we heard about Cuphead‘s first (and likely only) DLC expansion, but The Delicious Last Course is nearly here. If the DLC’s gameplay reveal is any indication, you can expect the same stunning art design, brutal difficulty, and fast-paced action that made Cuphead such a surprise hit.
Goat Simulator 3
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC (Epic Store) Release Date: Fall 2022 No, you’re not going crazy. Developer Coffee Stain Studios has decided to skip Goat Simulator 2 and jump straight to Goat Simulator 3 instead. Not only will this game offer more goat-based chaos than its beloved predecessor, but the addition of a four-player (four goats?) multiplayer mode means that everyone can get in on the fun.
Gotham Knights
Platforms: Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PC The latest trailer for Gotham Knights didn’t reveal a ton of new information, but it did reveal a little more about the game’s version of Nightwing. Will this action game live up to the standards set by the incredible Arkham Knight series or will it crumble under the weight of the considerable expectations set by those games? We’ll all find out when Gotham Knights is finally released in October.
Layers of Fears
Platforms: Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PC (Steam and Epic) Release Date: Early 2023 Developer Bloober Team returns to the Layers of Fear series with this 2023 sequel that doesn’t look like it’s going to break the franchise’s mold. Of course, given that Layers of Fear is arguably Bloober Team’s best game and one of the scariest horror experiences in years, there’s really no reason for them to do anything more than deliver on the potential of this concept yet again.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a card-based strategy title from the team behind the recent XCOM reboots, looks to offer a unique take on one of Marvel’s slightly more obscure properties. While some are worried about the nature of the game’s strategy action, everything we’ve seen of the project so far suggests it could be something special.
One Piece Odyssey
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC Release Date: 2022 While fans of the One Piece series will absolutely want to keep an eye on this game, One Piece Odyssey isn’t just for fans. This title’s beautiful visuals and traditional JRPG turn-based gameplay make it one of the most exciting RPGs of 2022. Definitely keep an eye on this one if you’re not already.
Routine
Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC First revealed over a decade ago, Routine is a sci-fi horror game built around stealth, hacking, and good old-fashioned running for your life. While we still don’t have a release date for this one, there are some signs that we might actually get to play this perennial reveal show darling after years of waiting.
Stormgate
Platforms: PC Release Date: Unknown (Beta in 2023) One of the biggest surprises of Summer Game Fest was the reveal of Stormgate, a sci-fi RTS from some of the minds behind the Starcraft series. There appears to be a bit of Starcraft in this game’s themes and design, but Stormgate’s team says that they want to find ways for this free-to-play RTS to stay true to the genre’s spirit while introducing a few new ideas.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC If you haven’t been keeping up with Shredder’s Revenge, you really just need to know that it’s basically a throwback to those classic TMNT arcade beat-em-up games from the ’80s and ’90s. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, this game will feature two additional playable characters (April O’Neal and Casey Jones) to support its new six-player co-op mode. It should be an absolute blast.
The Callisto Protocol
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC Release Date: December 2 While everything we’ve heard about The Callisto Protocol so far suggests that it’s essentially a spiritual successor to the fan-favorite Dead Space series, the project’s latest gameplay trailer really hammers home how close the connection between these games really is. Given that the project is being helmed by Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield, we really wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Last of Us Part 1
Platforms: PS5, PC The worst-kept secret of Summer Game Fest 2022 was leaked ahead of the actual event and formally revealed during the showcase. We’ll have to see whether or not this PS5 remake justifies its $70 price tag, but the truth of the matter is that it’s kind of hard to blame PlayStation Studios for wanting to remake one of the beloved and highly-acclaimed games in recent memory.
Witchfire
Platforms: PC Release Date: Unknown (early access in 2022) It’s been too long since we’ve seen more of The Astronauts’ rougelite FPS project, but the latest trailer for Witchfire got the hype flowing again pretty quickly. Given that some of the minds behind Painkiller and Bulletstorm are working on this game, you can expect it to be a beautiful, fast-paced, and fundamentally entertaining shooter with style to burn.
